As parts of efforts to improve computer science delivery to secondary students in Nigeria, Online Hub Educational Services over the weekend trained over 500 teachers in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The training which is the first of the series in the six south west states is aimed at developing and correcting the poor foundation of teachers in computer science.
Speaking at the Lisabi Grammar School Hall, Creative Director, Online Hub Educational Services, Ishola Adebayo said the high demand for computer literate students cannot be met with sub-standard computer science graduates churned out all over the country.
Ishola berated the poor foundation of teachers in computer science and lack of instructional aids which contribute to the growing problems of teaching computer science effectively to students in secondary schools.
He noted that the training which will reach an estimated 4,000 computer science teachers in the six southwest states will create online training modules for them in line with the curriculum of the National Educational Research and Curriculum Development and the Universal Basic Education Board.
Ishola added that those who took part in the training include, “secondary school teachers with experience teaching computer science and other Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) discipline in Ogun State.
“With the high demand for computer literacy, the teaching and learning of these skills is a concern among professionals. The poor foundation of teachers in computer science and lack of instructional aids contribute to the problems of teaching computer sceince effectively to students.
“The training covers specific and core aspects of computer science including programming language & steps, networking topology, database management, computer software, hardware & communication systems.
“This exercise will allow us to effect important improvement to computer science delivery for secondary education whilst making more impacts in our community of practice here in Nigeria,” Ishola said.
Also speaking at the event, Chairman, Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), Olabosipo Ogunsan added that the training will introduce modern curriculum to all computer science/STEM teachers in Ogun State.
