Nigeria Nationwide league side, Almar Fc has been crowned champions of Ogun state 2019 Aiteo Cup after defeating Gateway United on penalty shoot out on Sunday at the MKO Abiola International stadium.
Gateway was defeated 3-2 on penalties after a goalless draw at regulation time.
Gateway started on the front foot and almost scored a scrappy goal as Almar struggled to clear the ball as early as the 10th minute.
On the half-hour mark, dead ball specialist Okolo Michael’s free-kick narrowly missed the target.
With five minutes to the halftime break, the best chance of the half fell to Kola Odunbaku whose shot went off the bar just inside the area. Proceedings ended with goalless at the break.
The second half started just as lifeless as the first half ended with little or no chance for both teams but popped to life when Okolo Michael hit a 25-yard effort with less than 15mins to full-time but Almar goalkeeper comfortably clawed the ball.
Both sides were unable to find the back of the net at regulation time and the match proceeded to a penalty shoot out.
On the road to final, Almar defeated Olisa FC in a penalty shootout while Gateway United defeated Nilayo FC to book the last final ticket.
Almar would proceed alongside Gateway united to represent Ogun state at the national Aiteo cup later this year. The former threatened to cause upsets at the national level.
Almar Head coach, Micheal Onirugun, who spoke to our correspondent after the final, stated that his team was ready to cause upsets in the National Aiteo cup.
“We have started very well and we made it; the set of the pitch affected our game because we played on the tour. We want to go far in Aiteo cup, we have been there twice and we believe we can do it.” Onirugun said.
