Minister for Environment, Hajia Amina Mohammed has described the Environment Sector as a catalyst for economic growth and sustainability.

Speaking at the 3rd Edition of the Ogun Investors’ Forum in Abeokuta, Mohammed said Government should unlock the potentials that exists in the sector to grow their economy in order to achieve sustainable development through environmental protection.

She identified desertification in the North and ocean surge in the South as some of the effects of climate change in Nigeria, saying that an attempt to tackle the two challenges would bring about numerous economic benefits for the nation.

The Minister disclosed that the Federal Government “Great Green Wall” initiative was an example of Government’s policy on desert reclamation in the North, saying it would promote alternative energy and improve the standard of living of the people.

Mohammed said one of the major areas which Ogun and other States can partner with investors was waste recycling, adding that vast employment opportunities abound in converting waste to wealth.

On his part, the State Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Bolaji Oyeleye, one of the panelists at a session tagged “Sustainable Development: A Luxury or an Imperative For Emerging Economies?”, noted that the State’s focus was on Environmental protection through emission and effluent control.

‘’Our State is fast becoming a massive industrial hub in Nigeria though not without its attendant challenges. The issues surrounding effects of emission and effluent discharge from industries cannot be overemphasized and this why we expect industries to put in place Effluent Treatment Plant to monitor what they discharge to the environment.

He therefore urged industries and companies to plough back to the environment through tree planting and beautification.
