The judiciary is presently a troubled institution. Another arm of government, the executive, which is in control of the instruments of state, has arrogated absolute powers with which it has ignobly used to set aside the principles of separation of power as guaranteed by democracy and the Nigeria’s 1999 constitution. Feeling the heat of a badly undermined judicial arm is the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Nkanu Onnoghen.

All praises are due to Allah who has created everything in pairs. May the Peace of Allah be upon the soul of our noble Prophet Muhammad, his family, his companions and those who follow his path till the day of accountability. The family system anywhere in the world is witnessing various types of crises and this explains making a discussion on the family as the maiden topic of this column very important. It is also bring into fore the core reason why the column itself is called Al-Usrah (The Family). However, other issues as they relate to Islam and humanity in general will be given adequate attention insha Allah .

Nigeria’s biggest challenge today is the worsening unrestrained urge for hijacking power-at-all-cost and the ongoing emergency political alignment and realignment just for the transient purposes of capturing or retaining power in 2019.

A pro-democracy coalition has told President Muhammadu Buhari that the delay in submitting the name of Justice Nkanu Onnoghen to the Senate for confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) “is a big test on the unity of Nigeria.”

There are certain bold steps we must take as a nation if we are to overcome our present challenges and get the best out of this nation. These interventions should be designed to attract some tough measures that will ensure that public office is occupied by patriots and honest Nigerians. In a country of over 180 million, where corruption is endemic, allowing so much discretion is a challenge. As a first step, I will like to suggest open assets declaration.
