A Federal High Court sitting in Kano has sentenced 12 drug traffickers to a cumulative 36 years imprisonment for their involvement in illicit drug activities at the notorious Filin Idi drug den in the state.

The convicts, each handed a three-year jail term without the option of a fine, were found guilty by Justice S.A. Amobeda on Friday.

Their conviction marks a significant milestone in the fight against drug-related offences in Kano, according to a statement issued on Saturday by the spokesperson for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Kano State Command, Sadiq Maigatari.

Maigatari disclosed that one of the traffickers, Lawan Sani, was also convicted for assaulting an NDLEA officer during a 10-month manhunt. Sani was given an additional two-year sentence, bringing his total jail term to five years.

“The convicts were found guilty of orchestrating drug trafficking activities at the notorious Filin Idi drug den,” Maigatari stated.

“Each of the 12 individuals was sentenced to a three-year jail term with no option of fine, underscoring the severity of their crimes.”

The NDLEA described the convictions as a strong message to other traffickers exploiting the Filin Idi area for illicit drug operations.

“The conviction is a significant milestone in the agency’s fight against drug-related offences. It serves as a deterrent to others involved in drug trafficking and reinforces our commitment to combating the scourge of substance abuse in the region,” Maigatari added.

The agency reaffirmed its resolve to continue bringing drug offenders to justice and intensify efforts to rid Kano of drug trafficking and abuse.
