In a significant move to support education and community development, Dangote Cement Ibese Plant has awarded scholarships worth over N16 million to 120 indigent students from its 16 host communities.
This gesture was announced during the 2024 Community Day Celebration held on Wednesday in Ibese, Yewa North Local Government Area, Ogun State.
The Plant Director, Roy Uttam, explained that the scholarship initiative is part of the company’s commitment to fostering peaceful coexistence and mutual development with its host communities.
Themed “Celebrating Resilience through Effective Partnership,” the event also included the empowerment of women, farmers, and elderly individuals, further showcasing the company’s multi-faceted approach to community development.
Uttam, in his address, highlighted the company’s dedication to its Community Development Agreement (CDA).
He said, “Today’s gathering is another testament to the existing partnership and collaboration between the Ibese Plant and our distinguished stakeholders.
“ You have created a conducive atmosphere for our business to thrive, and we are reciprocating by transferring socio-economic benefits to the people as a complement to government efforts.”
As part of the day’s highlights, 55 chest freezers were distributed to vulnerable women to support their businesses, while fertilizers, pesticides, and knapsack sprayers were provided to 60 farmers to boost agricultural productivity.
Additionally, 50 elderly individuals benefited from a welfare programme.
Earlier this year, the company trained 30 youths in shoe and leather bag production, equipping them with starter packs worth millions of naira.
Another set of 30 youths is currently undergoing training in painting, screeding, and plastering, with tool kits promised upon completion.
Uttam acknowledged the economic challenges faced by the company due to inflation but assured the communities that delayed projects would be completed soon.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Adebola Sofela, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olu Aikulola, lauded the company’s efforts.
Sofela emphasized that the interventions have brought significant relief to residents and encouraged beneficiaries to make the best use of the opportunities provided.
He said, “The Ogun State Government remains committed to supporting Dangote Cement in promoting rapid economic growth and human capacity development.”
The event also showcased Dangote Cement’s 2024 Social Investment Scorecard, revealing a robust portfolio of completed and ongoing projects in its host communities.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the fund for tertiary students increased by 50%, while secondary students received an 80% hike.
It was also gathered that Solar-powered boreholes were either constructed or renovated in Imasayi, Abule Maria, and other locations.
Th company also embarked on renovation of health centers in Dowe, Ajibawo, and Balogun, with solar-powered facilities installed.
It also carried out projects such as installation of transformers and replacement of wooden poles with concrete ones in several communities.
In total, 17 projects were completed in 2024, with five ongoing and six rolled over to 2025 due to inflationary challenges.
Speaking further, Uttam reiterated the company’s long-term commitment to its host communities, stressing that the projects aim to address key developmental needs.
He urged stakeholders to continue fostering the existing harmonious relationship.
The Community Day Celebration ended with symbolic presentations to beneficiaries, a reflection of Dangote Cement’s unwavering commitment to sustainable community development.
