The Federal Government has announced the successful prosecution and conviction of over 325 terrorists as part of its intensified counterterrorism efforts.
According to a statement released by the National Counter Terrorism Centre under the Office of the National Security Adviser, the convictions were secured through the fifth and sixth phases of trials held at the Kainji Detention Facility.
The Phase 5 trial, conducted in July 2024, addressed 143 cases, resulting in 125 convictions. Similarly, the Phase 6 trial, held from December 9 to 13, 2024, involved 237 cases, leading to 200 convictions.
The sentences handed down ranged from death penalties to life imprisonment, with additional terms of 20 to 70 years for lesser crimes.
The government noted that the harshest penalties were reserved for those involved in heinous acts, including attacks on women and children, destruction of religious sites, mass killings of civilians, and the abduction of women and children during an assault on the Gina Kara Kai community in Borno State.
Those convicted of financing terrorism were sentenced to life imprisonment, a move aimed at dismantling the financial networks sustaining terrorist activities.
“This milestone underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to justice for terrorism victims and the protection of Nigerian citizens’ lives and property,” the statement read.
The trials, overseen by five Federal High Court judges, adhered to international judicial standards.
The government assured the public that stringent measures were in place to guarantee the safety of judicial officers, witnesses, and other participants involved in the proceedings.
“These trials are a reflection of Nigeria’s commitment to global best practices in prosecuting terrorism and upholding international conventions on human rights,” the statement added.
The Federal Government further emphasized that these prosecutions represent a significant step toward ensuring justice for victims and fostering stability in regions affected by terrorism.
