The National Assembly on Tuesday conducted a review of the 2025 budget passed last week, adjusting the capital expenditure while increasing the recurrent vote.
The move comes after lawmakers identified discrepancies in the initial budget figures.
The budget size of N54.99 trillion remains unchanged, but capital expenditure was reduced by over N500 billion, while recurrent expenditure was raised by an equal amount.
This decision followed deliberations in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, where various ministries, departments, and agencies saw corrections to their budget estimates.
Francis Waive (APC, Delta), Chairman of the House Committee on Rules and Business, presented the motion for the review, citing the need to address errors discovered by the Joint Appropriation Committee.
He emphasized that while adjustments were made to the budget estimates, the overall budget figure, including the statutory transfer of N3.64 trillion and N14.32 trillion, remained intact.
Several agencies saw their budget proposals reduced, including the Ministries of Defence and Police Affairs, the National Pension Commission, and the Pension Transition Arrangement Directorate.
On the other hand, the Presidency, the Federal Ministry of Information, National Orientation, and other critical sectors like Agriculture, Health, Education, and Social Welfare received increases to their budget estimates for the 2025 fiscal year.
Waive noted that the corrections were necessary for the accuracy of the document, stating that the adjustment process would not affect the total N54.99 trillion budget figure.
