In a landmark educational reform, President Bola Tinubu has mandated the reintroduction of history as a core subject in Nigeria’s basic school curriculum, effective from 2025.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during a televised interview on Channels TV.
History was controversially removed from the curriculum in 2007, a decision that faced widespread criticism for eroding civic values and disconnecting Nigerian youth from their cultural and historical heritage.
The federal government attempted to rectify this in 2018 when then-Education Minister Adamu Adamu ordered the reintroduction of history as a standalone subject. However, implementation faced challenges at various levels.
Speaking on the policy’s revival, Alausa expressed concern over the generational gap in historical knowledge among Nigerians.
“We now have people of 30 years disconnected from our history. It doesn’t happen in any part of the world,” he lamented. He added that President Tinubu had made it clear that history must be reinstated as a critical component of the school curriculum to foster national identity and unity.
The reintroduction plan will see history taught as a standalone subject in primary and secondary schools. Alausa highlighted its importance in shaping informed citizens capable of contributing to nation-building.
Adamu Adamu, during his tenure, had argued that the absence of history contributed to declining moral standards and a weakening sense of national unity.
He also emphasized its potential as a tool for national integration. His administration initiated the training of 3,700 history teachers to ensure the subject’s successful reintroduction.
State ministries of education, including those in Lagos and Taraba, have been aligning with the federal directive, although implementation across the nation has been uneven.
