In a remarkable display of academic excellence and institutional growth, the Ogun State Institute of Technology (OGITECH), Igbesa, celebrated its 6th combined Convocation Ceremony, graduating a total of 9,320 students.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that among them, 178 students distinguished themselves with top honours, while an additional 2,138 achieved upper credits across various disciplines.
Speaking at a press conference held on Monday ahead of the convocation, Dr. Abiodun Oluseye, the Rector of OGITECH, highlighted the institution’s significant strides under his leadership.
“Since assuming office, we have expanded our accredited programmes from 36 to 46,” Dr. Oluseye announced.
He stressed that his vision was to elevate OGITECH to a premier technical education hub in Nigeria amidst global advancements.
Dr. Oluseye addressed issues such as land disputes with encroaching land grabbers, financial constraints leading to unpaid salaries and promotion arrears, and infrastructural deficiencies including obsolete curricula and inadequate facilities.
According to him, despite the challenges, the institution has made substantial progress.
Dr. Oluseye reported that 29 programmes received renewed accreditation, with an additional 10 programmes newly approved by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), bringing the total number of accredited programmes to 46.
He added that the increase in PhD holders from 3 to 14 also reflects OGITECH’s commitment to academic excellence and research.
The Rector also emphasized the institution’s strategic partnerships with neighbouring industries, citing collaborations with companies like Quantum Packaging Limited and Nestle Nigeria Limited, which have provided employment opportunities for graduates and sponsored training abroad based on merit and performance.
Further highlighting achievements, Dr. Oluseye pointed to the establishment of a Robotics and Innovation Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for drone assembly and electric vehicle development.
Other milestones include the introduction of Open Distance, Flexible, and e-Learning (ODFeL) programmes, upgrades to healthcare services, and infrastructural improvements across lecture theatres, laboratories, and sports facilities.
The Rector said under his watch, OGITECH has also implemented internal welfare schemes such as healthcare benefits and an internal loan scheme for staff, alongside initiatives to enhance staff welfare and professional development.
