In a display of camaraderie and national pride, President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday hosted former world boxing champion Anthony Joshua at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos.
The visit was marked by Joshua presenting the president with an autographed boxing glove, symbolizing his connection to Nigeria and his commitment to inspiring the next generation of athletes.
The 35-year-old boxer, born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents from Sagamu, Ogun State, is currently on vacation in Nigeria.
His visit has garnered attention as he explores the country, engaging with various dignitaries and fans alike.
Earlier in the week, Joshua was hosted by Governor Dapo Abiodun at the Ogun State Government House in Abeokuta, where he was conferred with the title of the state’s “sports ambassador.”
The governor praised Joshua’s achievements and urged him to continue bringing pride to Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
Joshua’s trip comes just four months after his stunning defeat to Anthony Dubois in their IBF heavyweight title fight at Wembley Stadium, London.
The bout, which ended in a fifth-round knockout, marked a setback in Joshua’s career after a four-match winning streak. Despite the loss, Joshua vowed not to give up on boxing, stating his determination to bounce back stronger.
The boxer’s time in Nigeria has been met with widespread admiration, with many hailing his resilience and his efforts to stay connected to his roots. His meeting with Tinubu further highlights the importance of celebrating Nigerian talent, both at home and abroad, as symbols of inspiration for the nation’s youth.
