In a move that has sparked mixed reactions, the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has announced the appointment of 130 special assistants.
Ihunwo disclosed the appointments on Wednesday through a statement accompanied by the list of appointees. However, he did not specify the roles or portfolios assigned to the newly appointed aides.
“I have appointed the following persons as my Special Assistants,” Ihunwo said in the statement. “I congratulate them and call on them to serve diligently in the interest of Obio/Akpor Local Government. Their appointments take immediate effect.”
This development comes months after Darlington Orji, the former chairman of the caretaker committee of Ikwerre Local Government Area, appointed over 300 special assistants, senior special assistants, and executive assistants.
While Ihunwo’s move has been described by some as an attempt to strengthen local governance, others have criticized it as an unnecessary expansion of bureaucracy. Critics argue that such appointments often strain local government resources and do little to address pressing developmental issues.
Efforts to reach the council chairman for further clarification on the purpose and cost implications of the appointments were unsuccessful as of press time.
