The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory following the unfortunate demise of a 31-year-old physician in Ondo State, who recently returned from the United Kingdom.
The physician, who traveled to the UK on February 19 and returned on February 27, was admitted to a private health facility after exhibiting symptoms and tragically passed away on March 1.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that subsequent tests conducted on February 28 confirmed the presence of Lassa fever in the deceased, marking an alarming development amidst Nigeria’s battle against the disease.
As of March 2, 2025, the NCDC has reported a total of 535 confirmed cases and 98 fatalities across 14 states.
According to the NCDC report, states including Ondo, Bauchi, Edo, Taraba, and Ebonyi account for 91 percent of the infections.
Additionally, at least 16 healthcare workers have been infected, underscoring the occupational risks faced by frontline medical personnel.
Local health authorities in Ondo State have swiftly intensified response measures, including robust contact tracing and monitoring of individuals who shared flights with the deceased.
These efforts align with international health protocols, as the NCDC has notified UK health authorities, prompting the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to place some travelers under observation.
The Ondo State Ministry of Health has assured the public of ongoing efforts to contain the situation and safeguard community health through enhanced surveillance and containment strategies.
Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic disease primarily transmitted through contact with infected rodents or contaminated materials, can also spread among humans in healthcare settings with inadequate infection control measures.
In response to the escalating threat, the NCDC has issued a nationwide call to action, urging Nigerians to adopt preventive measures such as maintaining clean environments, practicing proper food storage, and observing rigorous personal hygiene practices, including frequent hand washing.
Healthcare workers have been specifically advised to adhere strictly to infection prevention protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment and the isolation of confirmed cases, in order to mitigate further transmission within healthcare facilities.
“Preventing Lassa fever is a shared responsibility. Together, we can curb the spread of this disease and save lives,” emphasized the NCDC in its advisory.
The NCDC has urged the public to promptly report any suspected cases to local Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers for immediate response and management.
