The former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has leveled serious allegations against his successor, Governor Uba Sani, accusing him of collecting 40 percent kickbacks from contractors before awarding government contracts.
El-Rufai made the accusation during an interview with Freedom Radio Kaduna on Monday, where he vehemently denied any involvement in corrupt practices during his tenure.
He claimed that despite overseeing contracts worth billions, he never personally met with contractors, working exclusively through commissioners and permanent secretaries.
“I have never stolen a kobo from anyone. If any contractor has given me a bribe, let him come forward,” El-Rufai asserted.
He added that when the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) invited contractors to testify, none came forward to accuse him of bribery.
El-Rufai’s comments, however, were aimed at the current administration, with the former governor accusing Sani of engaging in corrupt dealings.
According to El-Rufai, Sani travels to Abuja with contract documents, offering them to contractors in exchange for a 40 percent kickback.
He alleged that the current administration assumed this was the way government business had been conducted in the past, but emphasized that they were mistaken.
“They assumed that was how we ran the government, but they are wrong,” El-Rufai added.
The accusations come on the heels of El-Rufai’s defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), a move that has sparked political discussions in the state.
Governor Uba Sani has yet to respond publicly to the claims made by his predecessor.
