Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, and the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) have deepened their longstanding partnership with the inauguration of the Bankers Hall, a state-of-the-art, 160-seater multimedia facility.
The unveiling ceremony, held on Wednesday, at the university’s main campus, witnessed the presence of dignitaries, including the CIBN President, Prof. Pius Olanrewaju; the Olofi of Ilishan, Oba Mojeed Sonuga; university officials; students; and staff.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Olanrewaju noted that the Bankers Hall represents a significant milestone, marking the first time the CIBN is endowing a private university with such a project.
He said the initiative reflects the institute’s acknowledgment of Babcock University’s commitment to nurturing future leaders and fostering excellence in education.
“We believe that private universities also contribute immensely to human capacity building,” Prof. Olanrewaju said.
The Vice-Chancellor of Babcock University, Prof. Ademola Tayo, expressed profound gratitude for the donation, highlighting the robust relationship between the university and the CIBN.
He said, “The partnership has promoted financial literacy, shaped the future of professionals, and enhanced the university’s infrastructure.”
Designed to serve as a hub for research, learning, and skills development, the Bankers Hall aligns with the CIBN’s mission of promoting education and professionalism in the banking sector.
Mrs. Mojisola Bakare-Asieru, the CIBN Second Vice President, emphasized the importance of equipping students with knowledge and skills to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Prof. Samuel Dada, Dean of the School of Management Sciences at Babcock University, recounted the deep-rooted relationship between the two institutions.
He noted that their collaboration began in 2012 with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that allowed Finance undergraduates to register for the Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (ACIB) examinations with exemptions.
A second MoU, signed in 2015, extended the programme to postgraduate students pursuing M.Sc or MBA degrees in Banking and Finance, enabling them to graduate with dual certifications: an academic degree from Babcock University and the ACIB designation from the CIBN.
Prof. Dada also celebrated Babcock University’s achievements in the banking field, stating, “The university has the enviable record of producing three Presidents of the CIBN, including the current president, Prof. Pius Olanrewaju, who were all faculty members in the Department of Finance.
Additionally, Dr. Seye Awojobi, a PhD graduate of the institution, served as Registrar/CEO of the CIBN.”
Student representative Oluwatosin Noibi commended the CIBN for the facility, describing it as a testament to the power of collaboration and a project that would leave a lasting impact on the university and the wider community.
