The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has debunked allegations linking former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to an ongoing money laundering investigation involving Aisha Achimugu, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Felak Concept Group.
The anti-graft agency, in a statement issued late Friday by its spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, clarified that its probe into Achimugu had no ties to Atiku or Sanwo-Olu, dismissing claims suggesting otherwise.
“We wish to state unequivocally that the investigations of Achimugu have no correlation of any kind with the two political actors,” the statement read.
According to the EFCC, Achimugu is being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, and she has since been declared wanted by the commission.
The agency initiated its probe into her activities in 2022, but she had sought a court injunction restraining the EFCC from arresting, investigating, inviting, or detaining her over any alleged criminal act.
However, the EFCC disclosed that the injunction was overturned by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on February 19, 2025, allowing the commission to proceed with its investigations.
“The court ruled that ‘…no court has the power to stop the investigative powers of the Police or EFCC or any agency established under our laws to investigate crimes when there is reasonable suspicion of commission of a crime or ample evidence of commission of an offence by a suspect,’” the statement added.
Furthermore, the court upheld an interim order of forfeiture on assets belonging to Achimugu, which were suspected to be proceeds of crime, while dismissing her suit against the EFCC as lacking merit.
The anti-graft agency stressed that its probe into Achimugu is strictly a legal matter with no political undertones. It urged the public to disregard any claims linking the case to Atiku, Sanwo-Olu, or any other political figures.
“The foregoing clearly establishes that the EFCC’s case against her has no immediate or remote nexus with any politician or any veiled or open reference to any political engagement or transaction.
The EFCC is non-partisan and non-sectarian. We enjoin the public to continue to keep faith with the professionalism of the Commission without imputing any extraneous consideration to its works,” the statement concluded.
