President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he once threatened to sack the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, if his policies did not favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.
Tinubu made this disclosure on Sunday when Wike led a delegation of FCT residents to the Presidential Villa for an Eid-el-Fitr homage.
The president praised Wike’s efforts in revitalising abandoned projects and improving healthcare facilities in the FCT.
He described the minister’s achievements as a testament to Nigeria’s diversity, noting that Wike, a southerner, has effectively governed the nation’s capital, located in the North-Central region.
Recounting a past conversation with Wike, Tinubu said the minister had approached him with a request to exempt the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) to enhance developmental projects.
“I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said, ‘Please, take us out of this problem of TSA so that I can do more work and achieve more,’” Tinubu recalled.
“I threw in my own political guide: ‘Would that give me any opportunity for my party to win the election in the FCT? If this thing goes too much in your favour, you will lose your job.’ Then he said, ‘Okay, we settle that, Oga.’”
The president commended Wike’s performance despite his southern background, stating that his work in Abuja demonstrated the importance of national unity and cooperation.
In his remarks, Wike highlighted the removal of the FCT Administration from the TSA, the appointment of permanent secretaries, and the creation of the FCT Civil Service Commission as key reforms that have improved governance and service delivery in the capital city.
The minister also invited Tinubu to the commissioning of completed projects as part of activities marking the president’s second anniversary in office.
During the visit, Wike, on behalf of the FCT Administration, presented a special Eid-el-Fitr greeting card to Tinubu.
