Amid a prolonged power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, families of admitted patients have resorted to bringing personal generators and solar invertersto sustain medical care.
PLATFORM TIMES reports that the hospital has been grappling with power supply disruptions since October 26, 2024, when the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) disconnected its electricity over unpaid bills.
The crisis has significantly affected critical medical services, forcing patients and their families to provide alternative power sources to ensure life-saving treatments continue.
Recently, medical students from the University of Ibadan staged a protest, urging the federal government to intervene and restore stable electricity to the facility.
In response to the worsening situation, the Oyo State Government acknowledged UCH’s power challenges and announced plans to connect the hospital to its newly commissioned Independent Power Plant (IPP).
“The Oyo State Government is aware of the power supply challenges at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
“Although the facility is managed by the federal government, the OYSG plans to connect UCH to the State’s Independent Power Plant (IPP) as a medium-term solution,” the government stated in a post on X.
While the intervention offers hope, patients and healthcare workers continue to endure the hardships caused by the blackout.
Health sector stakeholders have repeatedly called for special electricity subsidies for medical institutions to prevent disruptions that endanger lives.
