President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate release of N15 billion to mitigate the impact of impending nationwide floods, following warnings from climate experts.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed the development on Wednesday while speaking at a workshop on flood risk monitoring and coordination held at the National Counter Terrorism Centre in Abuja.

Shettima said the President directed relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies to intensify collaboration and deploy resources to avert the anticipated disaster.

He noted that Tinubu remained committed to working with development partners to harness technical expertise, financial support and operational capabilities in curbing the threat.

“Last year alone, floods affected over five million people, displaced 2.3 million Nigerians, destroyed more than 450,000 hectares of farmland, and forced 1.2 million children out of school,” Shettima said.

“This is not a scenario for academic debate. It is our reality. The victims represent all of us, our futures and a national economy under strain.”

He decried the country’s previous reactive approach to climate-induced disasters, stressing the need for timely and proactive strategies.

Also speaking, the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, announced the formation of a task force to forestall the looming crisis, emphasising the importance of early warning systems and swift response.

He urged stakeholders to work together to achieve the objectives of the workshop, describing it as a matter of national interest
