A resident of Lagos State, Nnanna Daniel, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for attempting to sexually assault a 13-year-old girl.

Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court handed down the sentence on April 22, following Daniel’s guilty plea to an amended charge of attempted sexual assault by penetration.

Daniel, who was initially arraigned on July 27, 2021, on a charge of defilement, had pleaded not guilty.

However, during a court proceeding held on April 15, 2025, the state prosecutor, I.D. Solarin, informed the court of a plea and sentence agreement entered into by Daniel and his counsel, S.N. Nwogu.

This led to the amendment of the original charge and Daniel’s subsequent guilty plea.

In his judgment, Justice Oshodi described sexual offences against children as a “grave violation of trust” and noted the lasting harm such acts inflict on victims and their families.

“The prosecutrix in this case was a child of merely 13 years at the time of this incident – a young person entitled to protection, not exploitation,” Oshodi said.

He added, “Having considered all relevant factors, I hereby sentence you to 14 years’ imprisonment, with the sentence deemed to have commenced from the date of your remand on May 18, 2018.”

As part of the plea bargain terms, Daniel’s family is to ensure his rehabilitation upon his release.

The convict is also prohibited from having any direct or indirect contact with the victim or her family.

His actions were said to have contranvened Sections 33 and 38 of the Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency Law of Lagos State, 2021.
