Police Constable Arrested For Cybercrime Escapes From Custody In Ogun

A serving officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Constable Idris Oloyede, has been declared wanted by the Ogun State Police Command after escaping from custody barely five hours following his arrest for alleged involvement in cybercrime and other criminal activities.

PLATFORM TIMES reports that Oloyede, popularly known as “Abuja” and attached to the Odeda Divisional Police Headquarters, was reportedly apprehended around 6:10pm on Wednesday, May 21, by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

He was also reportedly  being investigated for conspiracy, robbery, stealing and aiding cybercrime operations in the state.

The Command, in a signal, disclosed that the officer escaped at about 11:30pm while on an “enquiry” mission with detectives at Odeda Township.

“The Police Constable Idris Oloyede, a.k.a Abuja, under investigation by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of Ogun State for offences of conspiracy, robbery and stealing, has escaped from the team while on enquiry at Odeda Township at about 2330hrs of May 21, 2025,” the signal read.

The statement further noted that Oloyede has been declared wanted and anyone with useful information on his whereabouts should report to the nearest police station or hand him over to the Divisional Police Officer in Odeda.

PLATFORM TIMES gathered that Oloyede’s arrest followed a confession by a suspect already in custody who alleged that the officer provided him with two Facebook accounts and an MTN SIM card used in perpetrating online fraud.

A follow-up search at the constable’s privately rented residence, located behind the police barracks in Odeda, led to the recovery of iPhones and several SIM cards believed to be connected to illicit activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed Oloyede’s ties to a cybercrime syndicate.

He was handed over to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, before the escape.

This incident adds to growing concerns over criminal infiltration within the ranks of Nigeria’s security agencies.

The Ogun State Command has pledged to intensify efforts to re-arrest the fleeing officer and bring him to justice.
