The Defence Headquarters on Tuesday confirmed the killing of a dreaded terrorist kingpin, Yellow Danbokkolo, during a week-long military offensive in the North-West.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed in a statement that the operation, codenamed Operation Fagge Fasan Yamma, was carried out by troops in collaboration with hybrid forces, air components, and other security agencies.

Kangye said the coordinated assault was launched following credible intelligence on the movement of armed terrorists fleeing from military pressure across parts of Sokoto and Zamfara States.

“During the encounter, Yellow Danbokkolo, a notorious terrorist leader who had tormented communities in Eastern Sokoto for years, sustained life-threatening gunshot wounds and died on Monday,” the statement read.

The slain terrorist, according to the military, was more feared than the infamous Bello Turji. Danbokkolo was allegedly behind several deadly attacks, including the 2021 Shinkafi massacre in Zamfara State, where travellers were burnt alive in a shocking act of arson.

Military sources revealed that Danbokkolo was addicted to pentazocine, a powerful painkiller, which he reportedly abused to numb himself while carrying out gruesome operations.

The Defence Headquarters noted that the killing marks a significant success in the military’s ongoing counter-terrorism campaign and vowed to sustain pressure on remaining terrorist leaders, including Turji, who is said to be in hiding.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains committed to restoring peace and normalcy across the country. We call on Nigerians to support and cooperate with security agencies as we intensify efforts to rid the nation of criminal elements,” Kangye added.

Danbokkolo’s death is seen as a major blow to terrorist networks in the region, with residents and security experts hopeful it would weaken banditry and restore confidence in military efforts.
