A 14-year-old boy, identified as Eke Miracle, has been arrested after allegedly attempting to sneak beneath an aircraft at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, raised fresh concerns over aviation security breaches at one of Nigeria’s busiest airports.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Police Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the teenager was intercepted on the airport’s restricted tarmac while allegedly trying to position himself under an aircraft preparing for operations.
Adeola described the act as a “serious breach of aviation security protocols,” noting that the minor had unlawfully gained access to a highly restricted area in violation of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria byelaws governing safety and access control.
“The Airport Police Command intercepted a 14-year-old male, identified as Eke Miracle, in connection with a stowaway attempt at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport,” the statement read.
“The minor was discovered on the airport tarmac while attempting to unlawfully gain access beneath an aircraft, an act which constitutes a serious breach of aviation security within a highly sensitive operational environment.”
The police said the boy was immediately taken into protective custody, with his parents promptly notified in line with child protection procedures.
Authorities added that the interview process was conducted in the presence of his parents, while ensuring the provision of care and welfare support throughout the process.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Police Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, reiterated the need for strict adherence to safety regulations at aviation facilities.
She described the airport as a critical national asset that must be safeguarded through heightened vigilance.
“The airport remains a critical national asset that demands the highest level of vigilance and strict compliance with aviation security protocols,” she said.
Ogunbode also urged parents and guardians to monitor the movements of their children, particularly around restricted and high-risk locations such as airports.
The police confirmed that the case would be handled under Nigeria’s juvenile justice framework, adding that the teenager would be charged before the appropriate juvenile court.
Security agencies have repeatedly warned that stowaway attempts pose grave risks to both individuals and flight operations, stressing the need for sustained public awareness and tighter access control measures within the aviation sector.
