There was chaos in the Mabushi area of Abuja on Wednesday as three suspected park touts, popularly called agberos, were lynched and set ablaze by an angry mob after allegedly causing the deaths of a man, his wife, and their young son.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the tragic incident occurred on the Mabushi Bridge when the touts, said to be linked to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), allegedly attempted to extort money from the family by forcing their way into the man’s vehicle.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the touts dragged the steering wheel from the driver while the car was in motion, leading to a fatal crash that claimed the lives of the couple and their child instantly.
Infuriated residents and passersby reportedly descended on the suspects, beating them to a pulp before dousing them with petrol and setting them on fire.
A viral video seen by our correspondent showed the men lying on the ground as flames engulfed their bodies, while onlookers shouted in anger.
A voice in the background of the footage could be heard calling on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to urgently ban AMAC park touts, accusing them of years of unchecked harassment, extortion, and violence.
“This is what AMAC agberos have caused. They chased this man, entered his car, and dragged the steering. Now, he is dead, his wife is dead, and his son too.
“The FCT Minister must act. These touts must leave Abuja,” an eyewitness lamented.
The gruesome mob justice has once again drawn attention to the growing menace of park touts in the nation’s capital, with many residents accusing them of operating with impunity under the guise of revenue collection for local councils.
As of the time of filing this report, the FCT Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the killings or the tragic accident.
