Residents of Malabo in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State have cried out for urgent government intervention following the outbreak of a strange ailment that eats away the flesh and damages bones of its victims.
The disease, which residents described as beginning like an ordinary boil before bursting and spreading into deep wounds, has left scores of people in excruciating pain and unable to carry out their daily activities.
One of the victims, Mrs. Phibi Sabo, narrated her ordeal to journalists on Friday.
“It started like a boil with pains, later got swollen and burst, then began to eat up the flesh on my leg, damaging the bones and causing serious pain,” she said.
According to her, the condition has left her with a large open wound despite hospital visits and medications.
“This has crippled me. I can’t work or take care of my family. We are begging the government to step in before the whole community is affected,” she pleaded.
Another victim, Malam Junaidu Adamu, who has been suffering from the same condition for more than two months, said he spends about N25,000 weekly on treatment without relief.
“The more I take the drugs, the worse it becomes. My wife has stopped going to work just to take care of me and the children. Our livelihood has collapsed,” he lamented.
The District Head of Malabo, Alhaji Aliyu Hammawa, confirmed that no fewer than 30 residents had been affected, with eight currently receiving treatment at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola.
He commended the state government’s swift response but urged a thorough medical investigation.
The Chairman of the Adamawa State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Suleiman Bashir, also confirmed the outbreak, saying the government had taken up the medical bills of victims receiving care at MAUTH.
“Samples have been sent for histology tests and results are expected within 10 days. We are appealing to residents to seek medical treatment instead of relying on traditional medicine,” Bashir said.
He warned residents to report any unusual health conditions promptly to avoid further spread of the disease.
