As Nigeria marked its 65th independence anniversary, Apostle Lawrence Achudume, General Overseer of Victory Life Bible Church International, has called on leaders to govern with empathy and align policies with the realities of ordinary citizens.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, the cleric reflected on the nation’s journey since independence, lamenting that despite Nigeria’s vast potential, many citizens are yet to feel the dividends of freedom.
“At 65, Nigeria stands as a nation of immense potential – yet the dividends of freedom seem elusive for many ordinary Nigerians,” Achudume said.
He noted the irony of Nigerians excelling abroad in diverse fields such as medicine, technology, and education, while the country continues to grapple with poor infrastructure and leadership gaps.
“You find Nigerians excelling abroad… but back home, we grapple with deficits that hold us back,” he observed.
The spiritual leader, however, commended the Federal Government’s recently introduced Student Loan Scheme, describing it as a bold step towards educational empowerment.
He urged government to ensure the scheme is insulated from political interference.
“The student loan initiative is a right step that will go a long way in supporting education. But often, when governments release funds or empowerment support for market women and other groups, it doesn’t get to them because of politicization,” Achudume warned.
He also decried the practice of vote-buying, where politicians distribute noodles and other petty items to sway voters.
“Nigerians deserve better than peanuts from politicians during elections. We need leaders who genuinely understand the common man’s hardships,” he stressed.
Achudume further emphasized the need for Nigeria to create environments that encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and intellectual development.
“For Nigeria to realize her giant potential, we need leadership attuned to citizens’ needs and ecosystems that empower talent,” he said.
Reflecting on the nation’s trajectory, he concluded that transformational leadership rooted in grassroots realities is the pathway to progress.
“Leadership feeling the pulse of ordinary Nigerians is crucial if we’re to match our global footprint with domestic development,” Achudume remarked.
