The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has claimed he personally spent ₦756 million to support President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 presidential campaign.
In a viral video circulating on social media on Friday, Akinsanya said he received no financial assistance from Abuja during the campaign and funded logistics, accommodation, and welfare of campaign operatives from his personal purse.
According to him, part of the expenses included securing 140 hotel rooms at ₦45,000 per night for four months, in addition to daily stipends for campaign workers.
“I spent ₦756 million of my own money during the campaign. Nobody sent a kobo from Abuja,” he said in Yoruba. “We took 140 hotel rooms at ₦45,000 each for four months. We fed people and took care of mobilization. It was my commitment to Asiwaju because I believe in him.”
Akinsanya, a staunch ally of the president, stressed that his loyalty to Tinubu remains unwavering and vowed to play a crucial role in ensuring the president’s re–election bid in 2027.
“We are preparing again for 2027. Asiwaju must return. It is not today I started supporting him,” he added.
His comments have stirred debate online, with critics questioning the source of such funds and supporters praising what they describe as “uncommon loyalty and sacrifice.”
The presidency has yet to comment on the revelation, while opposition figures and civil society groups have asked anti–corruption agencies to investigate campaign financing claims made by individuals and groups ahead of the 2023 polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have also not reacted as of press time.
