Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa (retd.), has declared that his second tenure will bring unprecedented heat on drug barons and trafficking syndicates across the country.
President Bola Tinubu on Friday renewed Marwa’s appointment for another five-year term, extending his leadership of the agency until 2031.
Addressing NDLEA personnel during a reception held for him at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Sunday, Marwa said the renewed mandate would deepen the agency’s war against narcotics, warning that drug cartels “have seen nothing yet.”
According to a statement by the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, Marwa expressed surprise at the warm welcome he received upon returning from Jumat prayers, saying it signified the renewed commitment of officers to the anti-drug campaign.
“The cartels have not seen anything yet,” he said. “I promise them this second tenure is going to be hell and bleak for them. Drugs shall not pass in or out of, or within, Nigeria.”
He also commended President Tinubu, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), and the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, for what he described as their unwavering support for the agency’s reforms and operations.
Marwa urged individuals involved in illicit drug production and trafficking, especially cannabis cultivators, to abandon the trade and embrace legitimate livelihoods.
He highlighted the agency’s Alternative Development Unit as one of the strategic interventions created to support offenders who are willing to turn a new leaf.
“This is the right time for them to drop that criminal business and face something legitimate,” he said. “Our greatest challenge has been cannabis growers, and we are ready to collaborate with anyone willing to desist and work with us.”
Marwa, who previously served as military administrator of Lagos State, was first appointed NDLEA chairman in January 2021 by former President Muhammadu Buhari following his role as chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse from 2018 to 2020.
Under his leadership, the NDLEA has recorded several high-profile seizures, arrests, and dismantling of drug networks—milestones he said would only intensify in the coming years.
