There was panic on Tuesday at the main gate of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, after several rounds of ammunition reportedly fell from a moving commercial bus along the Zaria–Katsina highway.
A viral video posted on X by security analyst and counter-terrorism publication, Zagazola Makama, showed bystanders milling around the scattered ammunition moments after the incident occurred directly in front of the university gate.
Witnesses said the ammunition dropped from a passenger bus speeding toward Katsina, raising fears among students and residents already unsettled by rising insecurity in Kaduna and neighbouring states.
An eyewitness, identified simply as Musa, said that the ammunition tumbled out of the vehicle “suddenly and unexpectedly.”
“We just saw the bullets fall from the bus as it drove past the gate. Before anyone could understand what was happening, the vehicle had vanished,” he said.
He added that some pedestrians quickly gathered the scattered ammunition and alerted security officers stationed near the university entrance.
A student who declined to be named described the incident as “strange and frightening,” noting that many feared the ammunition could be linked to supplies being moved to criminal groups operating in the region.
Security personnel later arrived at the scene and recovered the remaining rounds.
The development comes amid heightened concerns over attacks by bandits in parts of Kaduna and Katsina, where security operatives continue to record frequent confrontations with armed groups.
Authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
