Nigerian gospel singer, Shola Allyson, has revealed that she is married but no longer lives with her husband, describing her marital journey as far from the “happily ever after” many people expect.
Allyson, 54, spoke during an interview on Oyinmomo TV, where she reflected on her love life and the realities behind her long-held image as a singer whose hit album Eji Owuro celebrated love and companionship.
In the candid interview, the singer disclosed that she and her husband now live separately after years of trying to sustain the union.
“I’m married, but I’m not in my husband’s house. We live separately — he in his house and I in mine,” she said.
Asked whether she ever enjoyed the kind of genuine love she portrayed in her iconic love album, Allyson admitted that her expectations of marriage did not match her lived experience.
“We lied before. Those older than us didn’t tell us the truth. They made us believe that so long as you love each other, you will live happily ever after. But it’s a lie,” she said.
The singer explained that despite her efforts, the marriage never gave her the joy and stability people often associate with the institution.
“I didn’t have the experience of living happily ever after. I did all I could to make it work,” she noted.
Allyson added that while she often hears others speak of marital joy, she has never experienced it personally.
“Marriage has been a big challenge. I hear people talk about joy in marriage, but I have never experienced it,” she said.
