In a relentless effort to maintain law and order, the Joint Task Force operating under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) crushed 639 commercial motorcycles on Thursday for operating illegally in the capital city.
This recent action brings the total number of impounded and crushed motorcycles between August and December to a significant 1,509.
The impounded motorcycles, strategically captured at various spots in the city center including Airport road, Gudu, Lokogoma, and Games Village, were subjected to the crushing process as part of the ongoing commitment to eliminating illegal commercial motorcycle operations within the FCT.
Mr. Abdulateef Bello, the Director of FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Services, emphasized the continuation of these operations during the exercise in Abuja.
Bello stated, “We have had this exercise in series, and I am sure by now, it is no more news that we will continue to impound commercial motorcycles that are still operating in the federal capital city.”
He highlighted the impoundment of over 600 motorcycles on that particular day, underscoring that the act of crushing them served as a deterrent to those who doubted the existence of a ban on commercial motorcycles in the FCT.
Expressing his concern over the persistently high number of defaulters despite recent arrests, Bello pledged to conduct intelligence gathering to understand the reasons behind the continuous flouting of regulations.
The Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, Haruna Garba, echoed the need for the confiscation of motorcycles to ensure a secure environment in the FCT.
Represented by ACP, Operations, Mode Magawata, Garba emphasized the security threats posed by motorcycles, attributing their usage to various criminal activities such as one-chance robberies, snatching of belongings, and drug peddling.
Magawata highlighted the unwavering support and logistics provided to security agencies to effectively curb criminal activities in the city.
He attributed the observed decline in the overall criminality trend in the FCT to the clampdown on hoodlums and those exploiting motorcycles for criminal purposes.
The Commandant of the FCT Command of the NSCDC, Mr. Olusola Odumosu, added another dimension to the discussion, pointing out that many individuals entered Abuja using motorcycles to perpetrate crime.
He emphasized that enforcing the ban on commercial motorcycles’ operations would play a vital role in reducing the rate of crime in the city.
