Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), is set to face the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday over alleged money laundering charges, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed .
PLATFORM TIMES reports that Malami will be arraigned alongside his son, Abubakar Malami Jr., and Bashir Asabe, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Ltd, a firm linked to the ex-minister.
The trio faces 16 counts before Justice Emeka Nwite.
Sources revealed that Malami, who has been in EFCC custody since December 8, will attend the proceedings from detention.
The EFCC alleges that between 2015 and 2025, covering his eight-year tenure as AGF under the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, the defendants engaged in multiple suspicious transactions, concealing the illegal origin of billions of naira through bank accounts and property acquisitions in Abuja, Kano, and Kebbi.
According to the charge sheet, Malami, his son, and Asabe conspired to disguise the origin of funds, indirectly acquire properties, and retain sums they allegedly knew were proceeds of unlawful activity.
These acts are said to contravene the Money Laundering (Prohibition and Prevention) Acts of 2011 (as amended) and 2022.
The EFCC’s move marks a significant escalation in its anti-corruption drive, targeting high-profile public officials and their associates.
Malami’s arraignment comes weeks after the court dismissed the no-case submission of a former Minister of Power in a separate N33.8 billion fraud case, reinforcing the judiciary’s stance on prosecuting alleged financial crimes.
The trial is expected to draw national attention, given Malami’s previous prominence as the nation’s chief law officer and the sensitive nature of the charges.
