The Nigeria Police Force says it is facing obstacles in accessing the troubled community of Okuoma in the Niger Delta region due to an ongoing military operation.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda said this.
Speaking on Wednesday, Commissioner Abaniwonda explained that the police force has been unable to enter Okuoma due to the ongoing military operation in the area.
Despite this limitation, he emphasized the collaborative efforts with other security agencies to apprehend those responsible for the recent killing of 16 soldiers in the community.
“In the Okuoma incident, we have an ongoing military operation there. We have been on the ground, and we have been supportive.
We have not been missing in action,” stated Commissioner Abaniwonda.
He highlighted the integration of technology in policing efforts, noting that the perpetrators of the crime are being tracked and efforts are underway to ensure justice is served.
However, he refrained from divulging further details to avoid jeopardizing the ongoing operation.
Acknowledging the police’s responsibility for internal security, Commissioner Abaniwonda underscored the importance of coordinating with sister agencies during operations.
He assured that clearance for police entry into Okuoma is being pursued, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of residents in the state.
“I can assure you that very soon, we will be able to get in. For us to get to Okoloba and Okuoma, you would need to get clearance.
“ So we are working on this so that we can also ensure the safety of our people who are in those environments,” he affirmed.
Commissioner Abaniwonda concluded by reaffirming the police’s presence and dedication to their mandate of protecting lives and property throughout Delta State.
He stated, “We are on the ground, we are in our divisions, we are in our outpost, we are in our various formations.
“ We are rendering our services, which is what the mandate of the inspector general of police is.
“Protection of lives and property. We are doing this. Not just in this community but all over Delta state.”
