The Governors of Nigeria’s 19 Northern states convened on Monday in Kaduna with key traditional rulers from the region.
The meeting, hosted at the Sir Kashim Ibrahim Government House by Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, was led by the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya.
It aimed to confront critical issues plaguing the Northern region, including rising insecurity, poverty, high numbers of out-of-school children, and persistent power outages.
The high-level gathering saw the attendance of governors from states such as Kaduna, Gombe, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Borno, Bauchi, Kwara, and Adamawa. Deputy governors represented other Northern states, underscoring the collective resolve of Northern leadership to tackle these pressing concerns.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, also joined the forum to brief attendees on military operations targeting banditry, terrorism, and other security threats across Northern Nigeria.
Several eminent traditional rulers were present, including the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Saad; Shehu of Borno, Umar El-Kanemi; Emir of Zazzau, Nuhu Bamali; Ohinoyi of Ebira land, Etsu Nupe Yahaya Abubakar; Emir of Kazaure; and the Emir of Bauchi.
Their participation highlighted the crucial role of traditional institutions in addressing the crisis affecting the North.
In his opening remarks, Governor Yahaya underscored the need for immediate interventions to stabilize the region, stating that insecurity has severely undermined economic growth and development in Northern Nigeria.
Echoing his concerns, Governor Sani called for collaborative efforts between the government, traditional institutions, and security agencies to create sustainable solutions.
Northern Nigeria has faced prolonged challenges of violence, particularly from banditry and insurgent activities, which have not only strained local economies but have also disrupted education and basic infrastructure.
The recurrent power outages have compounded these problems, further stalling economic activities and adding to the hardship of residents.
The Northern States Governors’ Forum pledged to continue its engagement with all stakeholders to implement effective measures aimed at restoring peace and fostering development in the region.
