At least 20 local governments in Lagos State shared a staggering N77.9bn in allocations within the first two months of 2025, with each council receiving no less than N1bn during the period, a recent investigation by PLATFORM TIMES has revealed.
According to the report, Alimosho Local Government, Nigeria’s most populous LG, topped the chart with the highest cumulative allocation of N5.36bn, receiving N2.31bn in January and N2.88bn in February.
Closely following was Ajeromi-Ifelodun, which received N5.36bn—N2.01bn in January and N2.31bn in February—while Oshodi-Isolo got N4.17bn in total over the two months.
Other LGs with high allocations include Ojo (N4.22bn), Surulere (N4.01bn), Mushin (N4.22bn), Ikorodu (N4.09bn) and Kosofe (N4.27bn).
Agege, a densely populated LG in the mainland axis of the state, received N1.83bn in January and N2.10bn in February, totalling N3.93bn.
Similarly, Apapa LG received N3.51bn, while Badagry, a historic coastal town, got N3.58bn.
Epe, known for its agrarian economy, got N3.49bn, while Eti-Osa, home to major economic centres like Victoria Island and Lekki Phase 1, received N1.71bn in January and N1.96bn in February, amounting to N3.67bn.
Also on the list, Ibeju-Lekki, a rapidly developing corridor, received N3.35bn, Ifako-Ijaiye got N3.88bn, and Ikeja, the state capital, was allocated N3.69bn.
Lagos Mainland came close with N3.68bn, while Lagos Island received N3.50bn. Shomolu, a compact and vibrant LG, was allocated N3.84bn.
According to data from BudgIT, Amuwo-Odofin received the lowest allocation among the 20 LGs, with a total of N3.16bn.
The findings shed light on the scale of monthly allocations disbursed to local councils in Lagos, raising fresh questions about transparency, public accountability, and the impact of such funds on infrastructure and service delivery in Nigeria’s commercial nerve centre.
Efforts to get responses from relevant local government authorities on how the funds have been utilised were unsuccessful as of press time.
