A tragic incident has occurred at the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa, as a 200-level Chemical Engineering student of the Federal University, Otuoke, reportedly drowned while attempting to swim across the river in fulfillment of a N300 bet.

According to sources familiar with the situation but who preferred anonymity, the unfortunate event took place on Sunday morning. Despite efforts by onlookers, the body of the deceased, whose identity remains undisclosed at this time, has yet to be recovered.

Witnesses revealed that the student engaged in a wager with fellow classmates, each contributing N300 to the bet.

The challenge involved swimming across the creek, a task that tragically resulted in the student submerging underwater and failing to resurface.

A fellow student, speaking on the condition of anonymity, recounted, “Yesterday morning, a 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river.

They all raised N300 each for the stake. As he was swimming, he dipped and he has not been seen after that. He is still missing up till now.”

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mercy Ekott, were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.

Additionally, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Musa Mohammed, stated that he had not yet received information regarding the incident.
