The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has raised the alarm, saying, 200 trucks carrying the illicit sugar products have entered Nigerian markets.
NAFDAC said the dangerous products imported from Brazil and Indian have been found in various communities, including Mubi, Gamboru’gala, Saki, Keshi, Badagry, and Idi – Iroko in Ogun State.
The agency said the sugar is being sold at prices ranging from N32,000 to N34,000 per bag.
NAFDAC said this in an official statement released on Wednesday, alerting the public that the sugar was not registered and that it lacks Vitamin A
The agency added that a public notification was given regarding the illegal importation of unauthorized sugar manufactured in Brazil and India.
NAFDAC said “it has been estimated that around 200 trucks carrying these illicit sugar products have entered Nigerian markets.
“These products have been found in various communities, including Mubi, Gamboru’gala, Saki, Keshi, Badagry, and Idi – Iroko. The sugar is being sold at prices ranging from N32,000 to N34,000 per bag.”
Consequently, the importation and sale of the products pose a significant risk to consumer health, as their safety and quality cannot be guaranteed.
The statement revealed that the unauthorized sugar products are being imported into Nigeria through various routes, including Cameroon (Douala), Niger, Chad, and Benin Republic.
This unauthorized sugar are then distributed within Nigerian border communities such as Borno, Adamawa, Lagos, Oyo, Ogun States, and others.
NAFDAC urgently calls upon importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant within the supply chain.
