The Central Naval Command, Nigerian Navy, Yenagoa, has debunked the rumour circulating that a rating officer of the command died on Saturday during a clash with some political thugs while the Bayelsa State House of Assembly election was ongoing.
The flag officer commanding the Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral Saidu Garba, made the clarification in a statement signed by Commodore Joseph Akpan and issued to Newsmen in Yenagoa.
Garba said the loss of the rating officer was not related to either any violence or politics related but suffered a fatal gunshot which resulted to his death in a hospital in Brass local government.
The flag officer also noted that the late naval rating officer was on escort duty onboard a ship at the sea which unfortunately came under an attack offshore Brass.
“The command wishes to state unequivocally that personnel of the Nigerian Navy remains apolitical, resolutely neutral and will continue to adhere strictly to its professional code of conduct.
“The media is hereby advised to always verify information from the appropriate source before rushing to press in order to avoid spreading fake news that is capable of misleading the public,” he said.
