There is palpable tension in the Ogun state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, following the visit of a fact finding panel from the National Secretariat of the Union in Abuja to look into the issues surrounding the controversial March 29th election of the council.
Some aggrieved members of the union had petitioned the National Leadership of the NUJ over allegations of disenfranchisement of professional journalists, multiple voting, violence and undue interference by union leaders from neighbouring states of Lagos and Oyo.
In a move to address the injustice, a two member fact finding panel from the NUJ National Secretariat visited the Iwe Iroyin, Abeokuta Press Centre on Thursday 11th April and held meetings with identified stakeholders, including the leadership of Chapels in the state.
As members await the verdict of the NUJ national leadership on the call for the annulment of the election, we gathered that palpable tension has descended on the members with the executive produced by the controversial election running helter skelter in the bid to find legitimacy.
A source within the illegitimate group boasts that they had reached out to notable individuals to prevail on the NUJ national leadership to overlook the petitions and give recognition to them as the new NUJ executive in Ogun State.
“There is no cause for alarm, we are in touch with Abuja, those clamouring for annulment are just trying to beat a dead horse, you can see that we are moving, we have visited many people, including the Governor and they have accepted us, the NUJ Leadership will have no other choice than to allow us to continue. In fact, we told the fact finding panel from Abuja what we want and we trust them to do the needful” said the source.
But the aggrieved members, many of whom were violently prevented from voting during the controversial election have vowed to ensure that justice prevailed on the matter.
Reacting on behalf of the aggrieved group, Mr Olatunbosun Olawale expressed confidence in the credibility of the NUJ national leadership to address the injustice by ensuring the annulment of the election, stating that disenfranchisement was a serious injustice that must not be condoned under any guise.
“Our attention has been drawn to the recent suspicious moves by some people parading themselves as the new executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists ,Ogun state Council to legalize illegality, despite the efforts by the national secretariat to address the controversies that trailed the recent election. It however, stands logic on the head that while the entire members of the Council are still awaiting the directive of the national leadership of the union , the people in question have continued to perpetrate a lot of illegalities in the name of the union. Olatunbosun disclosed.
He maintained that “The whole world must be told that ,the election held two weeks ago was characterised by irregularities and fraud and have rendered the exercise null and void. The aggrieved members have made some efforts to challenge the sham and gladly, the national leadership of the union ably led by our amiable national President , Chris Iziguzor has begun the move to address our grievances .
He added that the group was amazed that as the national leadership of the union is making efforts to address the issue, some impostors have desperately begin some moves to confer legitimacy on their status .
He listed part of the moves they have taken within the few times they perpetrated the injustice to include; visitation to the state Governor who innocently accorded the respect of the union leaders ; also , they have begun tampering with the assets and disturbing the occupiers of the assets. It shows we have tyrants seeking legality for their illegal adventure.
He therefore, asked the impostors, why are they in a rush? Why can’t they wait till the national leadership implement the recommendations of the fact finding ? Why are they in hurry?
He also warned the impostors to stop parading themselves as the union executive and advised the general public including the state government and other corporate bodies against dealing with them in such manner, until the national Secretariat of NUJ comes up with it’s recommendation.
