Councillors across Ogun state on Thursday, occupied the premises of the Ogun State House of Assembly protesting what they called an unlawful sacking pronouncement made by the state lawmakers.
The House of Assembly had last week during it sitting suspended all the councillors in the state over allegations of financial misappropriation.
The councillors arrived the entrance of the assembly few minutes to 8:00 clock with cardboards of different inscriptions such as ” The lawmakers are lawbreakers, Respect the court on local government elective officers tenure, OGHA led by RT. Hon Surah Adekunbi, Don’t rubbish Dapo Abiodun’s administration through your selfishness among other various inscriptions.
Few minutes after 8:00 clock, the convoy of the speaker of the House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi arrived the premises of the assembly and the councillors immediately charged at him to prevent him from going into his office but few minutes after he ( the speaker ) was able to pacify them and promised to meet with all elective officers of the local governments across the state on Friday.
When the speaker left for his office, the councillors retired to the gate and prevented all other lawmakers from coming into the premises of the assembly.
Later, Security operatives began to arrive the scene of the protest in there detachable numbers but even at that, desired peace for the smooth running of the assembly was not achieved.
Earlier during the protest, The leader of the protest and councillor at the Abeokuta Southeast LCDA, Azeez Oyedele told the speaker that he and his colleagues have been hearing rumours of suspension but added that they can’t be suspended because there was no correspondence to that effect.
He said, “we heard rumours that we have been suspended and we have also heard that you didn’t recognise us as honourables. Why would you suspend us when the issue of the local government autonomy is at its peak?.
“Till this moment, there is no allegation against us, at least before we can be suspended we should be told what we have done, but even till now we haven’t received any letter, nothing like that.
“You said you are concerned about us but there is nothing to show for this claim, we are your junior colleagues and we want you to show that truly, you are working for our interest because that kind of verbal expression has gone viral on social media”.
However, in his reaction to journalists at the sideline of the protest, the Speaker said he was surprised to see the protesting councillors adding that their approach is not the best way of resolving the issue at hand.
“I am surprised to see them here this morning, but, the best way is to act responsibly.
“I have informed two Chairmen before now that we have received petitions against them but the took it for a joke, don’t forget, I am just the first amongst equal, the decision was taken by 20 members of the house.
“Ours is to pass a resolution, the implementation is for the executive, and if they haven’t received any letter why are they here?.
“In a sitting of 20 members, what would the speaker do contrarily?.”
