The Election and Credentials Committee of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists on Saturday declared that, the electoral body has lifted ban on politics and campaign for all elective posts with effect from Friday, 11th October, 2019.
The electoral body released time table for fresh election to various positions for new officers to run the affairs of the council for a term of three years.
This followed annulment of the controversial election by the National Headquarters of the union, following irregularities which characterized the poll, necessitating the appointment of caretaker committee to oversee the council affairs to set up electoral body for new election.
The Electoral Committee Chairman, Lanre Ogunyinka in a statement signed alongside Secretary of the credential committee, Ayo Obadimu said, “the lifting of the Ban consequently, signals the official Commencement of the Electoral activities by all Registered and Practicing Journalists in the State towards the final Elections of the Union’s State Council Executives as approved by the national body of the union”, the statement said.
The electoral body said all interested members of the Union in the State are put on notice on the process of the elections as which start from Thursday, 17th October, 2019 with sale of nomination forms.
The statement explained that Thursday, 31st October, 2019 is date for closure of sales of forms and submission of nomination forms, while Monday, 4th to Wednesday, 6th November, 2019 dedicated for screening of aspirants for the Elections and Friday, 8th November, 2019 is date for release of list of qualified aspirants.
The statement explained that Monday, 11th November, 2019 to
Friday, 22nd November, 2019 dedicated for claims and objections, and Monday
25th November, 2019 for display of final list of candidates/ eligible voters
for the elections.
The statement said Thursday, 28th November, 2019 for close of campaigns which terminate 12 midnight.
The electoral committee said Friday, 29th November, 2019 is for elections between 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, followed with release of results and Swearing in Ceremony commence immediately.
The Committee reiterated it’s determination to conduct and effect a very transparent and peaceful election with a high sense of responsibility, accountability and respect for the Constitutional Provisions of the Union.
The electoral body declared that it would not condone any act or conduct that could be inimical to the smooth process of the election from any member of the Union, and warned those who have nothing to do with the election to stay away from the venue
“Consequently, the Committee wishes to announce that it has put in place enough security mechanisms to ensure the success of the election and protections of law abiding members throughout the period of the elections”, the statement reads
“We therefore advice non members of the Union as well as those who have no legitimate reason or business to be around the the election premises to keep off in their own interests, please. For further enquiries, concern should be addressed to the Secretary to the Committee, NUJ Press Center, Iwe Iroyin House, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta.”
