No fewer than 623 travelers have lost their lives, while 3,192 were reportedly injured in 782 road crashes that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in five years, PLATFORM TIMES reports.
In an investigation conducted by PLATFORM TIMES, it was revealed that the different road crashes on the Expressway involved 474 mini buses, while 282 trucks were also involved in the fatal accidents.
A document which was exclusively obtained by PLATFORM TIMES from the policy, research and statistics department of the Federal Road Safety Corps showed that the 782 crashes involving 255 cars, 58 tankers, 57 trailers, 63 SUV, 52 motorcycles and 41 pick-ups occurred within January 2014 and December, 2018.
Findings further revealed that other categories of vehicles such as bicycles, tricycles, luxury buses and vans were also involved in some of the road crashes on the Expressway.
The documents states that in 2014, 67 road crashes involving 113 vehicles occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, while 92 people lost their lives, 200 people were injured in the multiple accidents.
However, findings revealed that there was an increase in the number of crashes that occurred in 2015 with an increase of over 30 per cent. It was also observed that while 154 lost their lives, 649 road users were injured in the 146 road crashes that involved 252 vehicles in 2015.
Similarly, there was also a rise in the number of deaths, injured and crashes that occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in 2016. The road crashes which rose to 170 involved 262 vehicles recorded 144 deaths, while 750 people were also injured.
PLATFORM TIMES also observed however, that there was a decrease in the road crashes, the number of deaths and injured people on the road which links Lagos and Ogun to Ibadan in the year 2017.
It was observed that while the road crashes which involved 202 vehicles reduced to 126, no fewer than 82 were reportedly dead, while 458 people were recorded to have been injured on the road.
Meanwhile, there was an increase in road crashes in 2018.
PLATFORM TIMES observed that there has been a wide increase in the number of accidents occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway since 2018 till date, as multiple accidents occurred almost every day on the road.
It was learnt that most of the accidents was due to the impatience of drivers especially in the diverted areas which are under construction.
The accidents that occurred in 2018 are 273 crashes which involved 107 vehicles. While 151 people were recorded dead, 1,135 people reportedly sustained various degrees of injury on the roads during this period.
Findings by PLATFORM TIMES revealed that most of the accidents on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were caused by over speeding, break failure and reckless driving especially in the diverted and construction areas.
