The Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Ijebu South-West church of Nigeria, Revd. Dr. Babatunde Ogunbanwo on Monday rejected the incorporation of the militiamen in the western Nigeria security outfit codenamed ‘operation amotekun’ .
The Bishop noted that the Oodua Peoples Congress and other local security outfits are irrelevant on how successful the amotekun operation will be.
He said this at Ijebu while speaking at a press conference organised to commemorate the 10th inauguration anniversary of the church.
He insisted that there must be proper scrutiny of any local security operatives that want to join the amotekun operation.
He added, “if anybody want to join amotekun, let them apply and proper interview should be done to them.
“I will not subscribe to the incorporation of OPC and the likes in Amotekun. What have these set of people done in the past.
“They are just there and making shakara all around. How many of them have gone to the bush to rescue our people that are being kidnapped.
“All you will see many of them doing is attending government function, you will see them carrying staff and cars all around looking for recognition.”
The Bishop however warned southwest governors to be careful of sycophants not to hijack the amotekun operation from them.
The Bishop of the Anglican communion stressed that the governors should beware of sycophants who are just supporting the initiatives because of what they will gain.
Bishop Ogunbanwo added that the new security outfit must be unique in its operation so as not to give room for sycophants.
He also commended the southwest governors for coming together so as to achieve the establishment of the security outfit.
He maintained that the governors must be ready to work with security agencies such as Police and Nigeria Army in achieving the objectives of the security outfit.
He added, “the governors should let amotekun stand clear if they want it to be successful. They should let Amotekun be a different outfit and let see what they are doing.
“I believe in statistics, let’s make statistics on what they will achieve and after one year, we can sit down and review it.
“Let me at this junction appreciate the governors of the southwest for putting in place operation Amotekun. We thank them for coming together at least for the first time they are doing something together.
“I commend sincerely all our governors in southwest, but I am warning them that they should not allow sycophants to take over Amotekun from them.
“We know a lot of those sycophants in the past that have not done anything. The governors should be aware of sycophants who are just there to eat to take over operation amotekun.
“I also want to advise them the they should work with the police. There should not be disparity, they should work together with security outfits such army in achieving the essence of the operation amotekun.”
Speaking on the achievements of the southwest Diocese in the last 10 years, the Lord Bishop disclosed that 12 churches have been built in different part of the Ijebu district.
He added that the priests which have increased from 30 to 55 have done post-graduate studies in different universities.
Bishop Ogunbanwo further noted that different buildings such as ultra-modern Bishops court, Bishop’s chaplain’s house, dormitories service quarters, Diocesan water factory, Diocesan farm, Diocesan prayer mountain, among others were erected in the last 10 years.
According to him, the church is looking forward to new stories in the coming years.
“The church is focusing on six agendas which include light, loving, investing, growing, healing, and transforming,” he added.
