Members of the Ogun state House of Assembly have been brought under fire for refusing to isolate themselves or get quarantined after a nine days trip to the United Kingdom and Dubai respectively.
This is coming barely a week after the lawmakers return from the trip which was said to have been led by the Speaker of the House, Hon. Kunle Oluomo.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that the lawmakers did not spend its nine days in the UK but also visited Dubai before coming to Nigeria.
Aside social media banters thrown at the lawmakers, the Chairman of the Ogun state labour Party, Com. Arabambi Abayomi, however called for the compulsory quarantine of all the lawmakers describing their action as Carlos.
His words, “some members of the Ogun State House of Assembly returned into the State a few days back but neither did they self-isolate nor get screened.”
“It has become grave, so dangerous and compulsory to force into isolation immediately, not only those who just returned from the UK and other Western world, but all the members of the legislature, including the Speaker and the totality of the staff and aides with their families.
“Even the friends identified to have come into contact with all the mentioned should be compelled to self – isolate themselves and thereafter be screened.
“We in the Labour Party in Ogun State, as the official party representing the interests of the working class, formal and informal sectors and citizens of Ogun State strongly condemn in the extreme, this act of the elected members of the OGHA and we state unequivocally that the Government should immediately send the disobedient legislators into self-isolation, identify all persons they had contacts with and do the needful.
“All the members of the Ogun House of Assembly should be immediately rounded up and quarantined because the first victim of COVID-19 in Ogun also arrived simultaneously with the members of the Ogun Legislature from the UK.
“The House of Assembly complex should be closed up and fumigated as well,” Arabambi added.
Meanwhile a grapevine source in the Assembly complex told PLATFORM TIMES that few of the Assembly worker ( not lawmaker) have gotten themselves tested but have no symptom.
The state Director of a youths group called, Aktive Network has also charged Ogun state Government to be more proactive over the virus adding that the government should look into isolating the lawmakers.
“It is on record that the Ogun State Government in a bid to show how serious and responsible it is towards containing the virus had earlier issued a notice that all gatherings of 50 people and above should not be seen in the State at this period.
“There have been general obedience to the executive proclamation of the Government and some viral videos have shown how law enforcement officers in the State have been moving about to enforce compliance and disrupt gatherings that violate Government’s directive.
“Some Lawmakers of Ogun State House of Assembly were away in UK in the last two weeks for seminar and they have since returned to the State without observing the mandatory 14-days self isolation as prescribed to further prevent the spread of the corona virus. This must be looked into immediately.”
