The Ogun State Police Command has said it would soon commence the process of recruiting special constables that would support the command to fight insecurity and other criminal activities in the state.

PLATFORMTIMES reports that Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Kenneth Ebrimson disclosed this on Tuesday while speaking with newsmen shortly after the inauguration of the new Chairman of Police Community Relation Committee (PCRC) in the state.

Ebrimson stated that the recruitment would begin when all the advisory committees on community policing concluded plans on the mode of operation.

The Commissioner noted that the special constables would be trained on the police operation and they would operate with the police uniform but without the police badge.

Ebrimson maintained that the special constables would assist the command to prevent criminal activities, give the police intelligence report and resolve crisis among members of the public.

The Police boss however urged members of the PCRC to corporate with the police command to make the state free of criminal activities.

He said  “The other levels before this week , the other strata of the community policing at the Area command level , at the local government level  at the divisional level will be concluded without any doubt this week and thereafter we will now start with a pilot scheme of the recruitment of the constabularies who will now form the board of the community policing practitioners at the community level to assist the police in prevention, information and intelligence gathering and conflict resolution .

“So, in no distance time when all these level of advisory committe of the community policing has finalized we will now see the next level will now be the consolidation of the recruitment of the constabularies and sending them to a modicum training of the police operation which will translate to bringing them in as part of our partners and remember also part of the concept, the idea to give them a sense of belonging is that when recruited they will be given the police uniform but the only difference will be the signal, the badge , so that one can give them that sense of belonging and they will now see the police as our police not their police “

Meanwhile, the new Chairman of PCRC in Ogun State, Dr. Samson Popoola vowed that his administration would transform the community policing.

He said “I intend to work with my people. I intend to carry them along. My mission for Ogun state is to have a society where everyone is security conscious , a society where everyone will see security as a fundamental right, a society where everyone will see security of their neighbour, security of their community and security of their town as a duty.

“We want to bring out that innate African security consciousness back to our people so that they will be able to work with us , they will be able to see police as one of their people , they will be able to see police as their own people.

“Like I said, we want to transform from Nigeria police to Nigerian police , a Police that will be owned by Nigerians, supported by Nigerians , provided for by Nigerians and Nigerians that will be rready to give information and intelligence to the police at all time”.
