No fewer than 26 inmates have reportedly fled from the Okere- Warri Correctional Center following the destruction of the facility by ENDSARS Protest hijackers in Delta State.
The Deputy Controller of the Okere- Warri Correctional Centre, Mr Okonkwo Adimagbua confirmed the incident yesterday during the inspection of the burnt Okere- Warri Correctional Centre by Deputy Governor of Delta State, Barr. Kingsley Otuaro.
According to Adimagbua , “When the hoodlums came on October 22, 2020, we thought they were ENDSARS protesters but before we realised what was happening it had became a full scale destruction. The destruction of the facility aided the escape of 26 out of 1007 inmates in the facility before the intervention of security operatives”.
Earlier, Otuaro bemoaned the large scale of destruction to the facility built some years back.
“It is quite disheartening for what I am seeing here today. This is a complete destruction of all the facilities meant for inmates” he said.
He then appreciated the officers in the facility for showing the highest level of professionalism they adopted in preventing a full blown jail break. He assured that the State Government will assist in ensuring the structure is rebuilt.
