The students of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic have accused the department of allegedly collecting illegal levy from them before they can be allowed to defend their Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
Some of the students who spoke with PLATFORM TIMES complained that the department is insisting on N300 levy on each students before they can participate in the SIWES defence stipulated for Thursday.
PLATFORM TIMES gathered that a Broadcast Message sent to ND 2 Class group signed by the Department SIWES Coordinator, simply identify as Mrs.Olawunmi said that the students are to pay N300 each before they can defend their SIWES.
According to the broadcast message, “Please be informed that the date slated for SIWES defense remain unchanged I.e 17th December, 2020 by 9:00am. You as well to pay N300 each before the commencement of your defence. Best of luck fellow Coursemate.”
PLATFORM TIMES however observed that no fewer than 400 students will participate in the SIWES defence.
The students while describing the levy as illegal alleged that it has become a ritual in the department to pay an ‘unaccounted’ levy during SIWES defence.
One of the students identified as Oyin said, “We are not the first set that will be paying the levy. It has become a norms in the department, but, compulsory is wickedness.”
Another student, Taiwo said the N300 collected from the students is being used as refreshment for the supervisors.
When PLATFORM TIMES Contacted the president National Association of Science Technology Students,
Oludare Owolabi, described the allegation as untrue.
He said, “the department did not request for any fee before they (students) can defend their SIWES, that is not true”.
When contacted MAPOLY Public Relations Officer, Yemi Ajibola, described the rumour as untrue. He insisted that only those that are yet to complete their school fees are not allowed to defense.
“That’s a rumour, what I am aware of is that students who are yet to pay the balance their school fees are not allowed to defense, get it right”, he said.
