The co-fonder of a Nongovernmental organization, BAAWA initiative, Dr. Dimeji Oganla has said that Nigeria does not have the technical support for young footballers to thrive in the country.

Oganla spoke at a press conference to unveil the winner of the Africa-USA college soccer scholarship, Michael Adedokun in Abeokuta.

BAAWA in collaboration with Africa – USA college (AUS-Access) soccer recruitment held a soccer tryout, the first of its kind in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital.

Michael emerged after trials of over 1000 footballer between 15 and 21 years old. He was the only candidate that passed the SAT exams out of 10 candidates selected during the tour.

Oganla said lack of technical support has been the reason while the country will continue to export football talents at the expense of the local football.

He identified partnership between government and private organizations as way out.

In his words, “We lack that technical disposition to support young brilliant players in Nigeria. So that is why a lot of players are traveling out of the country to get exposure, to better themselves, to better their education, to better the way they think.

“By the time they come back they would bring their expertise, their technical knowhow and impact other young players and this will develop our local sports.

“The government could start by partnering private organisations and support them in developing sports in Nigeria. There are talents that have wasted away. Supporting and partnering organisations like the AUS-Access will boost sports development in Nigeria.”

He added that many players grow old before they come to limelight because there is no development from the background for football.

Explaining the benefits attached to Michael’s scholarship was the programme organizer of AUS-Access, Abdul Oganla who said the beneficiary has the opportunity of studying and playing professional football at the same time.

Oganla explained that the programme has been on since 2018, adding that five footballers have been sponsored so far.

He disclosed that footballer were assessed by American coaches based on academic performance, football skills and individual attitude.

Oganla said over 900 others failed because they either lied about age, had academic deficiency, poor spoken English or fake documents.

Also at the press briefing was the programme Director at BAAWA, Oluwakemi Soyebi who explained that the NGO is focused on rendering support and raising entrepreneurs.

She disclosed that Abeokuta Soccer Tryout is the first sport intervention that the organization will be facilitating.
