The Federal government of Nigeria has approved Monday 18th January, 2021 as the date for resumption of schools across the country.
This is coming amidst the second wave experience of the corona virus pandemic in the country.
In the press statement released by the director of press and public relations for the Presidential Task Force, Ben Goong, it was stated that schools will be reopened in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols.
The statement read in parts, “Sequel to the hint given during the press 12 January 2021 for the review of the proposed resumption date of 18 January 2021, the Federal Ministry of Education has undertaken a comprehensive appraisal of the situation.”
“After extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders, including State Governors, Commissioners of Education, Proprietors and heads of institutions, staff unions and students, the consensus of opinion is that the resumption date of 18 January should remain, while parents and respective institutions must ensure full compliance with COVID 19 protocols”
The total number of cases so far stands at 105,478 with 1405 death and 83,830 recoveries.
While the country is still expecting the covid-19 vaccine, the number of people tested so far is 1,121,484 representing less than 1% of the country’s population.
