Organizers of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA) has announced the indefinite postponement of the event.
The postponement of the event scheduled to hold in Kampala, Uganda on 20th February 2021 is not unconnected to the pandemic challenge.
In an e-mail sent out by MTV, organizers of the award said that they are concerned with the ‘current health and safety challenges.’
The mail reads, “After careful consideration, MTV Base is concerned that the current health and safety challenges will significantly jeopardize the ability of the campaign to continue to achieve its objectives.
“MTV Base will keep fans posted. The 2021 MAMA Kampala is a virtual event. Strict adherence to health and safety protocols as specified by WHO have been adhered to throughout the production process.”
Established in 2008 by MTV Networks Africa to celebrate the most popular contemporary music in Africa, the 2008 and 2010 events took place in Nigeria, first in Abuja and then in Lagos.
The Seventh edition is to hold this year as the event was last held five years ago (2017) in South Africa.
The award categories include Artist of the Year, Best Male, Best Female, Best New Act, Best Group, Best Live Act, Best Francophone, Best Lusophone, Best Pop/Alternative, Best Hip Hop, Best International, Legend Award, Best Collaboration in association with Absolut, Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Artist of the Year, Personality of the Year and MTV Base Africa Re-Imagined Award
